What We Know: Emotional Contagion is Real
Studies suggest that approximately 90 percent of the information we absorb comes not from words, but through tone, body language, and overall energy.
Think about the last time you were around someone who felt frustrated, anxious, or tense.
You didn’t need them to say a word—you could feel it.
What I’ve Learned: We Rarely Prepare for Our Second Conversation
When I work with leaders, I often ask what they’re preparing for their next big meeting.
The usual answers: An agenda. Talking points. Action items.
But what rarely comes up? The energy they plan to bring into the room.
And yet, that energy will likely have more influence on the outcome of the conversation than anything they say.
What You Can Try: Set the Energy Before You Speak
Before your next important conversation—whether with colleagues, friends, or family—try this:
- Decide how you want this person to feel after you speak.
- Take a moment to embody that feeling yourself before you speak.
For example:
- If you want them to feel calm, take a deep breath beforehand and settle your own energy.
- If you want them to feel motivated, reconnect first with why you’re excited about this.
- If you want them to feel valued, remind yourself of why you genuinely appreciate them.
Jane Goodall once said:
“You cannot get through a single day without having an impact on the world around you. You have to decide what kind of difference you want to make.”
Every day, your energy shapes the world around you.
So before you step into a room, pause for just a moment—because whether you realize it or not, your energy always speaks before you do.
